Mr. Muriithi Githiga has recently retired as Principal Technologist in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice, a position that he has held for many years. The department wishes Mr. Muriithi the best as he starts this new chapter of his life.
We would like to congratulate Dr. Tirop on her recent promotion to the poisition of Lecturer. Dr. Tirop returned to the University of Nairobi in mid 2012 having completed a masters and PhD degrees in th United Kingdom. We take this opportunity to wish Dr. Tirop well in her career.
Dr. Kuria has been promoted to Associate Professor. Professor Kuria has taught at the University of Nairobi since 1974 and has previously served as the Head of the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice. His specialization is in solid dosage form technology. The department congratulates Professor Kuria on his new appointment.
Drs. Nyamu and Mwangangi have recently published a paper entitled “Trends of Acute Poisoning Cases Occurring at the Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya” that has been accepted for publication in the The East and Central African Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Vol. 15, 2012 29-34).
Drs. Nyamweya and Tirop have recently published a paper entitled “Assessment Of Human Pharmaceutical Products Registered In Kenya By Route Of Administration And Type Of Dosage Form” that has been accepted for publication in the The East and Central African Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Vol. 15, 2012 38-46).
The department has started a Masters of Pharmacy in Industrial Pharmacy. The first class of students was accepted and started classes in September, 2012. The science based program is expected to contribute to the capacity development and strengthening of the local pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.
The Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice was conceived as a section within the Department of Pharmacy in the Faculty of Medicine in 1974 with one lecturer and a tutorial fellow. The Department became a fully fledged Department when the School of Pharmacy attained Faculty status in July 1995 under the constitute the College of Health Sciences of the University of Nairobi.
